Homemade Mexican Chalupas Recipe

Chalupas are one of the best things on the Taco Bell menu! Now you can have it on your dinner menu.

What I like most about Chalupa is the bread itself. I mean, it's almost like a glazed donut if you think about it. This is fried dough like a donut, right? It makes sense why I like them so much. You know what? Making chalupa dough is very easy and only takes a few basic ingredients.

What you need is

  • Flour
  • milk
  • Salt
  • Shorten
  • Developer powder

Mix all the ingredients into a ball of dough and you have a basis for chalupa bread. Of course, you divide the dough and fry it as usual. You will then fill chalupa bread with your favorite fillings of tacos such as beef, chicken or steak and lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and sour cream! You can fill the chalupa with whatever you want. This Homemade Mexican Chalupa Recipe allows you to be as versatile as you want. You can fry chalupa bread and make different toppings and let everyone serve it themselves.

Making Chalupa bread is quite simple. After you divide and remove the dough, you place half of the dough in a heavy-duty skillet, such as an iron skillet, and let it fry for about a minute. Then you flip the dough and let the other side fry, which should be a good chalupa shell. I will not lie, you will not get everything right, but you will get as many arches as you like.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 ¼ c. flour
  • 1 teaspoon. Developer powder
  • ½ teaspoon. Salt
  • 1 ounce shorten
  • 1 c. milk
  • Canola oil, for frying
  • 1 pound of ground beef, cooked
  • Sharp cheddar cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Sour cream
  • Taco sauce

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Heat oil in a shallow, heavy-duty skillet such as a cast-iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, add flour, baking powder, salt, and shortening. Use a fork to mix the ingredients. Pour milk into dry ingredients. Use a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients with milk to form a ball of dough.
  3. Turn the mixture to the surface in the form of powder and roll it until smooth. Mold the dough into bread about 8 inches. Divide the dough in two, then into four. See the picture above. Roll each piece into one ball and roll the small ball of dough into a round circle with a width of about 4-5 inches.
  4. Use a barrel and dip half of the chalupa mixture into the hot oil. After half of the dough starts frying but not enough chocolate, turn the chalupa bread with the other half of the batter-fried in oil. This is if you want to try having chalupas having sauce on the bottom for your fillings. If that doesn't matter to you, just fry on both sides for 2 minutes until they turn golden brown and remove from oil to a cooling rack lined with tissue.
  5. Fill your chalupa with beef, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and a little sour cream. Add taco sauce if desired.
